To Frog, or Not to Frog…

1 March, 2010

I’ve been knitting this pair of socks for a long time now. Actually, it wasn’t a pair, it was the leg of the first sock. And I haven’t been knitting it all that much, obviously, since it’s not finished.

Mostly, I’ve been walking by this piece of knitting, glancing sideways at it, and sometimes just plain staring at it, hanging off my needles. Why? Because I know the sock is not coming out right.

Solution? I frogged it. To frog is to take knitting off the needles and unravel it. Completely. As in, begin from scratch. Coming to the decision was difficult, but once I made the decision, it was easy because I knew I could begin again and have a pair of socks I was much happier with, and more importantly, a pair of socks that worked.

The point in all of this? Sometimes when a WIP isn’t working, and letting it sit to come back to it with fresh eyes doesn’t resolve the problem, either—sometimes, you just have to begin again. It’s as difficult, and simple, as that.
