Sock Clubs 2.0

27 February, 2011

First, an update on my own self-imposed sock club. I’ve finished two more pair, plus began another.

I’ve also expanded my horizons. I mentioned in an earlier post that I’m not all that enamored with sock clubs because I’d prefer to pick out my own patterns and my own sock wool color. And this is still true. But I found a club that let me do that—sort of.

Over at Woolgirl, I came upon the Victorian Writers Club where I could buy only what I wanted. The ‘sort of’ part was the wool. I had no choice in color. However I loved the color offered (and the yarn itself—Zen Yarn Garden is wonderful). So I did it. I joined and bought the sole (bad pun, I know) sock kit the club offered: Sherlock Holmes. The pattern is The Sign of Four. It’s in a luscious cinnamony brown colorway called The Hound of Baskerville.  And if that wasn’t enough of a good thing, the pattern is by one of my favorite designers, Anne Hanson. Talk about win-win.

The kit arrived yesterday, with all sorts of goodies beyond the wool and pattern: handmade soap, a wooden box with a clock face top, a moleskine notepad w/pen, a stitch marker, and a bookmark, among other things.

Of course, I couldn’t wait to start this sock.

Elementary, isn’t it?

no it’s not elementary! How people can figure out how to knit is beyond me! I do not have the patience or the mind to learn. I’m so impressed with people that can make socks and sweaters!

Hi, Laura! I agree, it requires patience, but so does writing. :) I’m not so sure it has so much to do with one’s mind as it probably does with being visual and having good hand-eye coordination. And like most things, once you learn how, it’s easier than you think. ;)

No, it is not easy. I’m still struggling to learn but enjoying the challenge. I’m much better than I was this past fall :) The socks look great!

Thanks, Catherine! That’s key—enjoying the challenge—isn’t it?
